What "Korean skincare" actually means
The label appears on more and more products, ours included. It is worth explaining, because it does not mean ten steps.
It does not mean ten steps
The most persistent cliché about K-beauty is the ten-step routine. It existed, it is still practised, but it is not the definition. A minimal routine — cleanser, toner, serum, moisturiser, sunscreen — is perfectly consistent with the philosophy. What matters is not the number of steps but how well the products match your skin.
Ten steps done for no reason are ten chances to irritate your skin.
Prevention before treatment
This is the central idea and the one that separates the approach most clearly. The goal is not to repair damage but to stop it appearing: daily sun protection, consistent hydration, gentle cleansing, a protected barrier.
It is a change of time horizon. You are not chasing a transformation in a month; you are maintaining over years.
Hydration as the goal, not a side effect
This is where "glass skin" comes from — smooth, luminous, deeply hydrated skin. The method is not one rich product but thin layers stacked, using ingredients that hold water in the skin.
The skin barrier
Modern K-beauty has moved almost entirely towards protecting the barrier. The ingredients that keep coming up are ceramides, centella asiatica, panthenol and squalane — none of them spectacular, all of them aimed at keeping skin calm and functional.
It is the opposite of "stronger is better".
Ritual and consistency
The routine is treated as a moment of care rather than a chore. That sounds soft, but it has a practical effect: a routine you can face at night after a long day is a routine you actually do. And consistency beats intensity with any ingredient.
Formulation innovation
Sheet masks, essences, fermented textures — many formats now considered normal started in Korea. It is the visible part of the phenomenon, but not the important one.
In short
- Prevention before correction.
- Hydration in thin layers, not one heavy product.
- The skin barrier as the priority.
- Consistency over intensity.
